CS 176B -- Network Computing
Homework Assignment #0
Due by 11:59pm, Friday, January 12, 2001
Assignment Overview
This class uses a mailing list as an important tool for
communication between the instructor and the students.
I use it to announce updates to the class plan, quiz/exam
hints, and to forward student questions with answers. The best
way to make sure that everyone is on the mailing list is
to make joining the list into an assignment.
Assignment Details
Homework #0 requires that you subscribe to the class mailing
list by sending email to almeroth@cs.ucsb.edu with the
word "subscribe" (lowercase, and without the quotes)
in the subject line.
In the body of the email put the following information on a
SINGLE line:
- Starting at column 1, put your prefered email address (lower case)
- Starting at column 30, put your last name, first name (upper case, no spaces)
- Starting at column 55, put your major (upper case)
- Starting at column 60, put your class (one of JR,SR,MS,PHD,EXT only)
For example:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
To: almeroth@cs.ucsb.edu
Subject: subscribe
almeroth@cs.ucsb.edu ALMEROTH,KEVIN CS PhD

To receive full credit on this assignment, it is imperative
that you follow directions EXACTLY. Be especially careful
not to use MIME types, include an HTML version of the email,
append a .signature file, etc.
At some point over the weekend I will send email to the class
mailing list to ensure that everyone who is signed up for the
class is on the mailing list.
This assignment may seem a bit silly, and it sort of is. But the
goal is to strongly emphasize two things:
- following directions
- increasing (or establishing) your awareness of exactly what
your email program does, and how to control it
So pay attention and good luck.
