Arithmetic

• Java’s arithmetic operators are:
  • + for addition
  • - for subtraction
  • * for multiplication
  • / for division. Division of one integer by another gives an integer quotient, with no remainder (e.g., 7 / 3 is 2)
  • % for remainder.

• For example., 7 % 3 is 1. The % operator can be used only when both operands are int.
• What will happen if that is not the case?
• Does 3 * 5 + 7 equal 22 or 36?
• Using parentheses, you can force any order of evaluation that you want.
• The precedence for operators is as follows:

1. () Experssions in parentheses are evaluated first.

   If an expression in parentheses contains an expression in parentheses, then the innermost parenthetical expression is evaluated 1st. Parenthetical expressions on the same level (i.e., not embedded) are evaluated left to right.

2. *, /, % These operators are evaluated next.

   If an expression has several of these operators on the same level (i.e., not embedded within parentheses), then they are evaluated left to right.

3. +, - These operators are applied last.

   If an expression has several of these operators on the same level (i.e., not embedded within parentheses), then they are evaluated left to right.

• What is the value of the following expressions?
  • 3 * 8 + 9 equals ?
  • 3 * 8 + 9/4 equals ?
  • 3 + 8 % 9 + 4 equals ?
  • (3 + 8) / 9 equals ?
  • (3*(9 - 4) - 74/15/2) * (3 + 4*2*3) + 1 equals ?
