Java API Packages

• Java has predefined pieces of code called classes.
• These are partitioned into packages: disk directories, each containing a group of related classes.
• To access these predefined pieces of Java, we use import statements:

  import java.applet.Applet;

  tells the compiler to load the Applet class from the java.applet package.

• Our text book gives a short description of the major Java packages:

  Java API package	Explanation
  java.applet	The Java Applet Package
  java.awt	The Java Abstract Windowing Toolkit Package
  java.awt.image	The Java Abstract Windowing Toolkit Image Package
  java.awt.peer	The Java Abstract Windowing Toolkit Peer Package
  java.io	The Java Input/Output Package
  java.lang	The Java Language Package
  java.net	The Java Networking Package
  java.util	The Java Utilities Package

• For now, you needn't know when to import what package; this information is given to you.
