Declaring and Allocating Arrays

• You specify the type of the elements, and use the new operator to allocate enough memory for the number of elements in the array.

  int c[] = new int[12]; // allocates an array of 12 ints

  Alternatively,

  int c[]; // declares c to be an array of ints

  c = new int[12]; // allocates memory for the 12 ints

• When memory for an array is allocated (at execution time), its elements are initialized to:
  • 0, if the array is numeric (e.g., int, float, double)
  • false, if the array is boolean
  • null, if it is an array of references (to objects, such as TextField objects). We discuss this later.
