Pointers to my lecture notes (in HTML) and the order I intend to present them
in are given below. It is entirely likely that this schedule, like all
good schedules, may slip. Your mileage may vary.
Many of the lectures will refer to programming
examples. The source code for each example we be linked to the
notes themselves. I enthusiastically encourage you compile, execute,
and experiment with
the examples as you enjoy the other festivities provided by the class.
You will find all of the course materials under
/cs/faculty/rich/public_html/class/cs170, including source code and
makefiles. The principle platform of choice for this
course will be Linux and I will use the machines in the CSIL
as a test platform.
Lecture Notes
Jan. 20: A holiday.
Please be sure you have read Chapter 5 (or the chapter on
process synchronization) from the book.
Please be sure you have read Chapter 3 from the book.
Feb. 10: An exam at the middle of the term
. This lecture
will cover Chapter 6 of the book which you should have enjoyed by now.
Feb. 17: A holiday for you (although your OS never takes a holiday).
Chapters 8 and 9 are must reads.
Chapters 8 and 9 are still must reads.
Chapters 10, 11 and 12 are useful references, but the exposition will not
follow them closely.
Chapters 10, 11 and 12 continue as useful references.
March 5: In-class review for the Final
March 10: Class cancelled. Please study for the final.
March 12: Final exam.
