Course Description

This is new graduate-level course on mathematical foundations of data science. The primary format of the course is lectures by the instructor, roughly based on the forthcoming book Foundations of Data Science by Avrim Blum, John Hopcroft and Ravi Kannan. The current draft of the book is available at http://www.cs.cornell.edu/jeh/

The students are expected to have a solid background in analysis of algorithms, probability theory and combinatorics. Students may skim through the first 6 chapters of the book to evaluate their readiness.

The course will primarily focus on the following topics:

The course work will consist of in-class quizzes, homework and programming assignments, and a survey project.
