PDCS 2012 Las Vegas, Nevada November 2012 The PDCS'12 conference was again a complete success. Our conference continues to be a truly international conference. We had a significant number of papers from South America, Asia and Europe as well as from the USA and other parts of the globe. In addition to a strong technical program, we had two excellent Keynote Presentation. * Professor Mario Gerla from the University of California, Los Angeles presented his Keynote Address entitled Vehicular Cloud Computing He discussed current work as well as future research directions in this relatively new area of research. * Dr. Helmar Burkhart from the University of Basel, Switzerland will present the tutorial "The Why and How of Productive High-Performance Computing". The tutorial was an excellent introduction to different tools, languages and systems currently available in high performance systems. * Dr. Fernando G. Tinetti from the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Argentina for organizing a special session called "High Performance Processing (HPC) in Clusters. * For the first time we had two (last minute) Invited Presentations. Since these two presentations were received very well by the audience, we plan to continue with these invited presentation in the near future. Professor Gurdip Singh for the Kansas State University presented the talk entitled "Methodologies for Optimizing Distributed Algorithms and Middleware." Professor Teofilo F. Gonzalez presented the talk entitled "Restiction and Relaxation Approximation Algorithms" Awards Ceremony * The Best Reviewer Award was given to Professor Arthur H. Lee from the Claremont McKenna College in Claremont CA, USA. He has been an outstanding reviewer for PDCS and other IASTED conferences. This is the second Reviewer Award ever given at PDCS and we will continue with this type of awards in the future. * Best Paper Awards There were 59 papers submitted and 31 papers were part of the PDCS final program. The papers were partitioned into several different technical sessions. About 20% of the papers were nominated (by the reviewers) for the Best Paper Awards, and four papers were awarded the Best Paper Awards. The awards were announced during the Banquet. The four papers that received this award were: * Best Paper Award in the Area of Distributed Software Systems and Applications: A Distributed Resource Allocation Algorithm using Fuzzy Logic, by Francisco Ribacionka, Liria M. Sato, Luciana Arantes from University of São Paulo, Brazil and University Pierre et Marie Currie/CNRS/INRIA, France. * Best Paper Award in the Area of High Performance Computing: "A Software Architecture for Distributed Volume Rendering on HPC Systems," by Stefan Zellmann and Ulrich Lang from the University of Cologne, Cologne, Germany. * Best Paper Award in the Area of Parallel Algorithms and Architectures: "An Efficient Out-of-Core Implementation of Block Cholesky Decomposition on a Multi-GPU System," by Lin Cheng, Hyunsu Cho, Peter Yoon, and Jiajia Zhao, from Trinity College, Hartford, CT USA. * Best Paper Award in the Area of Networking: "Shorter Delay Intermittent Communication based on Pseudo Speed Estimation in WSNs," by Takanori Takehira and Hiroaki Higaki, from the Tokyo Denki University, Tokyo, Japan. We have started the initial preparation for the 25th IASTED International Conference on Parallel and Distributed Computing and Systems (PDCS'13) and we are considering several alternatives to enhance our technical program. You will all receive further announcements in the near future and we hope we can count again with your support. Thank you very much for all your support and your efforts to make PDCS'12 a very successful conference, and we hope to see you all at the PDCS'13 Conference. Please keep in mind the possibility of organizing special sessions, and feel free to contact IASTED (calgary@IASTED.com) and/or me (teo@cs.ucsb.edu) with any comments and suggestions about possible improvements to the conference.
