Facilities for Digital Multimedia Research

The participating departments and research laboratories are well equipped with state of the art computing facilities. These resources include:

  • Multimedia networking lab, with several formats of fiber interconnectivity, ATM and GigiBit switches and routers, and gateway servers

  • Computer vision and image processing labs, with high end image processing workstations, cameras, and audio/video capture devices

  • A digital classroom facility developed as part of the UCSB Digital Campus infrastructure project, with wireless connectivity and video servers for distributing lectures on demand

  • A distributed systems lab, with a CORBA server farm and virtual environment I/O devices

  • An active-sensing installation space, with multiple channels of video capture, analysis, and projection; and the pluriphonic sound studios, which allow up to 8-channel surround sound mastering

  • An eStudio with a lecture hall, an advanced projects classroom, interactive motion sensing cameras, and facilities for video editing and DVD production. In addition, a telecommunications research laboratory is being developed.

  • Resources at the Center for Research in Electronic Art Technology (CREATE)

  • Laboratories in the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI), including the 3-story Allosphere, a 360° lab for the study of immersive spaces.
