J1	Jaideep	Gravity Pong	Problem: The problem is the need for a game. It would be named Gravity Pong because it would be based on the classic game Pong and would include gravity wells. The first rule of Gravity Pong is that there would be two human players each using a different set of controls on the same keyboard. Each player would have a paddle on the left or right side of the stage, and he can move the paddle up or down. He or she would also have a set number of lives. The ball would appear in the middle of the stage, and either player must press a button on the keyboard to make the ball move in a random direction in order to start the game. Gravity wells would appear randomly throughout the stages and would attract the ball. The ball can bounce off of walls or other objects in the stage. If the ball gets past a player?s side, that player loses a life. The objective of the game is for either player to get the ball past his or her opponent?s side in order to make his or her opponent lose his or her lives. The programming project is necessary because complicated physics and animations can be modeled in Java. -------------------------------------- Proposed Solution: The solution to this problem is to entertain the user by implementing graphics, physics and creativity. J2	Jaideep	Gravitational Pool	Problem: We want a game that will demonstrate basic Newtonian physics. We want this to be in the form of a puzzle game where the player specifies the input conditions and the rest of the level is already laid out. Based upon these initial conditions, the user may or may not complete the goal. If the goal is not completed then the user will be able to alter these initial conditions until the level is passed. -------------------------------------- Proposed Solution: The user will start with an object like a cue ball and have to guide it to a target while interacting with different objects. Each object will have its own charge, mass, and velocity that will affect the path of the ball through gravity, electromagnetism, and collisions. The environment will be two-dimensional. The user will have control over the starting angle and speed of the ball, and once the ball is launched the user has no further control and the action is carried out by the level. J3	Jaideep	Virtual Restaurant Manager	Problem: People at my restaurant complain about large, overwhelming menus, long waiting lines, and being put on hold when ordering over the phone. I need a system that can present organized lists of menu items (that can be updated by me at anytime) to my potential customers online. This system must also provide a way for the customer to order their food items online and have a choice between pickup or delivery. On my end, the system must display all new orders placed by customers, existing orders, and an archive of completed orders. -------------------------------------- Proposed Solution: The goal of this project is to develop, deploy, and maintain an online application that can easily be integrated with new or existing restaurant websites. Functionally, our clients (restaurant owners/managers) will have the ability to register a restaurant account, create different food item menus (i.e. breakfast, lunch, dinner), add items to menus, modify items, remove items etc. They also have the ability to receive online orders placed by end-users accessing the web application on their server. End-users (restaurant customers) have the ability to view different menus (i.e. breakfast, lunch, dinner), add items to their order, specify number of items, add special comments and choose between delivery or take-out. J4	Jaideep	Epicenter	Problem: We want to entertain the user with a fun, relatively simple game. Specifically, we want the user to experience two sets of opposing feelings: determination versus panic, and recklessness versus wariness. The use case is to play the game, and specifically, to beat each level. The player will control a fast, maneuverable vehicle from a top-down perspective. The player will have to drive this vehicle through a 2-D environment with walls and canyons. Hitting walls will cause damage to the vehicle and slow the vehicle down. If the vehicle sustains too much damage, it explodes and the player fails. Several objective items will be located in each level. The player has to hit these items to collect them. Collecting all of them within the time limit results in success. However, there is not an arbitrary time limit. Instead, there are one or more bombs located on the map, which explode in slow motion, slowly consuming the map. If the explosion hits the player or an uncollected objective, the player fails. If possible, there should also be a number of single use power-ups. The game should include sound effects and music if possible. The graphics should be simple, but cool (more than just 8-bit sprites). Obviously, this game would be almost impossible to play in real life what with the explosives and limitations of actual physics. Besides, like racing simulators, our game will make a high-speed, high-thrill activity accessible. A video game is the best solution. -------------------------------------- Proposed Solution: The system will display a menu system that will, at least, allow the player to choose which level or save file to play. When a level starts, the player will be presented with a map so they can plan a route. The game will accept user input to control the vehicle and will display the game with a decent framerate. The player can pause the game if they want to grab a snack or otherwise relieve themselves. The system will auto-save the player's progress when the player beats a level. J5	Jaideep	Oiram	Problem: Our objective is to create a platformer game similar to the original Mario game where the user's goal is to navigate levels from start to finish by jumping to various platforms and avoiding enemies while achieving the maximum score. The goal of our game is to entertain the user and give them an immersive experience while using simple game mechanics and controls. -------------------------------------- Proposed Solution: The arrow keys and space bar will be use to control the character allowing him to move side to side and to jump. The user will be able to kill the enemies by jumping on them or using special items on them. The timer, items picked up, and enemies killed will contribute to the user's score. The game will contain three levels of difficulty that will also contribute to the score. Our game will contain various secret areas that have puzzles which will give the user higher scores. J6	Jaideep	Panik Sims	Problem: We are in need of a simulator that will predict what people will do in the event of a natural disaster. Preferably this will be given in the form of a news casting or textual information. We would like it if the simulation ran predictions before, during, as well as after the event has occurred. The scaling has yet to be decided, so a prototype of a small area (perhaps a small town) should be adequate as a first test. -------------------------------------- Proposed Solution: The program simulates the scenario by creating several virtual people in a virtual town, each programmed with varying behavioral patterns and responses to the disaster. The behavioral patterns and positions of the people will effect the way in which they react to the news and to the other people in the scenario. J7	Jaideep	Hades	Problem: We have thought of an interesting and unique game, and the problem this project intends to solve is to implement it, making it possible to play. The game is a fantasy game where the main character can level up through gaining experience, and where he progresses through a unique story line. The setting is a futuristic world where there is an abusive, dictatorial government. We find that the main character's parents held high positions in a government lab, and ended up being killed because they were unsympathetic to the government's goals. One of their coworkers informs the main character of this, telling him he is in danger, which starts him on his journey. Some of the objectives of the game are for the user to improve the main character by playing more, develop skills, and gain items to assist him in progressing through the game. Also, the user will try to progress through the different stages of the game and gather information from different characters to do so. -------------------------------------- Proposed Solution: Our solution to the problem will alleviate the player's boredom by adding interesting elements to the gameplay like the following. The user will gather information by exploring his environment and interacting with different characters and objects to find information that will help him progress through the game. Gaining experience will be made more interesting through a turn-based battle system, and the character can level up by engaging in more battles. Our solution will provide a graphical interface to allow the user to engage in the game. Since it involves keeping track of a lot of data, such as the items and the amount of experience the user has accumulated, and his progress in the game, as well as representing those factors and the environment graphically, this will be a good solution. J8	Jaideep	Square TD	Problem: To entertain users. Game Rule: The goal of Tower Defense is to try to stop enemies from crossing the map by building towers which shoot at them as they pass. Enemies and towers usually have varied abilities and costs. When an enemy is defeated the player earns money or points, which are used to buy or upgrade towers and fight the next wave of enemies. Game Objective: The game has no end so the objective is to obtain a higher stage in the game. A client might be interested in this game because it is a highly addictive source of entertainment. The client could potentially make a lot of money distributing this software to gamers. -------------------------------------- Proposed Solution: The most valuable part of the game will be the paths we need to create. J9	Jaideep	Study Buddy	Problem: We see the need to create a more efficient way to manage all of the information and tasks that a university-level student must keep track of. Often we find repeating efforts (like calculating our GPA - both in the CS program and overall) instead of having a central location for all of this information that we continue to update as the quarters pass. If a student has a particular goal in mind, like making the honor's program, we would like to have a simpler way to manage our progress towards that goal. We also find the way we study currently somewhat inefficient and see a way to optimize this task through programming functions to assist us. With our already busy lives, we shouldn't be concerned with duplicating efforts or wasting precious time studying in a roundabout manner. We look to Study Buddy for a solution. -------------------------------------- Proposed Solution: We would like to develop a system that is a central location for all things student that is simple to use, intuitive and even fun. It would track everything from your overall GPA to your current grade in a given class. Ideally, it would flag you when a course webpage has been updated and it could allow you to track goals (like get an A in CS50), tell you what you need on homework and tests to accomplish that goal and keep you informed of upcoming deadlines and opportunities. In addition to tracking overall progress, we want the system to have an interface where you could parse your course notes and then offer functions based on those notes like a point and click interface to create flashcards and/or quiz games to help you study. Lastly, we would like the system to have a sense of humor - like parsing your notes into Yoda-speak ("inheritance the answer is") and giving you little words of encouragement here and there. Y1	Yi	LightSpeed 2000	Problem: The need for multiuser entertainment. Objective: To capture the other team's flag x number of times until victory. The rules? You are limited only by physics. (At the programmers' discretion.) -------------------------------------- Proposed Solution: This project is a top-down space shooter. Players will follow around their individual ships as they travel around the map, dueling members of the opposing team and capturing their flag from their base. When a flag is retrieved, it must be returned to the player's base to achieve a point. When a player is defeated, they will respawn instantly at some point on the map away from either base. When your team reaches x points, you win! The input device will be the keyboard, with WASD or the arrow keys controlling movement, and space bar to shoot. Y2	Yi	MultiUser Chat	Problem: I need to be able to chat with many people at one time as well as engage in private conversations with only one or more people. The conversations must be text-based, sent and received to each other instantly, and it must be carried out over the internet. -------------------------------------- Proposed Solution: Our solution would consist of two parts: a server program and a client program. Many clients would be able to connect to a single server and communicate with each other over the internet. The server would be able to host multiple password-protected rooms that multiple clients could join and send messages through. Anything that is sent to the room is instantly made visible to everyone in that room. Clients could issue commands to the server to display a list of users connected to the server and the available rooms to join. Certain users with special permissions would be able to kick other users from the room or server as well as ban a user by IP address. It would also be possible to transfer files from one client to another. The client would be able to save a log of the chat to a file on their computer. Y3	Yi	The Adventures of... Wait Who Am I Again?	Problem: To create an in depth fantasy adventure text-based game. The game will consist of multiple classes the user can choose from to play as, and there will be multiple weapons the user can choose to equip during the game. There will also be many types of armor and special items that the user will be able to use during the game. The rules of the game are quite simple, after you wake up naked in a field somewhere you need to travel around the country and find your clothes again. There will be a preset number of commands that range from moving around the landscape to defending yourself and attacking during a fight. To play the game effectively in the time frame given we need a group of programmers working together to make sure that everything gets completed. -------------------------------------- Proposed Solution: There will be a small tutorial when the user first starts the game filling them in on the commands they have at their disposal. After that they will have to travel around to the 3 dungeons around the country to retrieve their clothing that has mysteriously disappeared. As they travel around they will encounter creatures that will wish to do them harm. Luckily for our user they will be equipped to handle these situations. As they fight these creatures off they will gain experience and grow as a character(There will be a leveling system that will determine how much damage a player can do when they are in a fight). Y4	Yi	UCSB Defense	Problem: We are writing a game to help bored users entertain themselves. It is a tower defense game. tower defense being a game in which enemies spawn and you build towers in order to kill them before they can reach your base. The game will spawn enemies and allow the user to place towers, which will attack enemies in range. The enemies will attack your base if they reach it and if the base is destroyed the user will lose the game. The user will do able to do all of these things via keyboard shortcuts, and a clickable menu interface. -------------------------------------- Proposed Solution: Our solution is a desktop application made in java via a seperated graphic renderer and a game logic unit. The game logic will be organized around an enemy interface and a tower interface. A logic class will perform the game events and update the objects under it's care. The renderer will be based around a renderable interface with things belonging to the domain of the menu, or the domain of the battlefield. The render method (currently the only method required by the renerable interface) will use the objects data(which is continuously updated by the game logic unit) to set where and how each object should be drawn on the next screen refresh. Y5	Yi	Grail	Problem: Our project proposes a game that provides entertainment for gamers who love to solve maze puzzles. The objective is to collect all of the necessary puzzle pieces while surpassing deadly obstacles (which increase in difficulty throughout the game), and reach the finish line. Using the arrow keys to maneuver the point of object, you will experience an epic adventure while playing Maze Master. -------------------------------------- Proposed Solution: Our solution is implementing the game in Java using Java's API. The amount of tries per level are endless (looping), but ends when the point of object touches a deadly object. As requested, music features will be added. Y6	Yi	Virtual Monopoly	Problem: I love playing the board game Monopoly, but my family members always cheat, can you create a computer version of the game that enforces all of the rules of the board game? It should play similarly to monopoly and make cheating impossible. -------------------------------------- Proposed Solution: Our project will be to create a computerized version of Monopoly that will have a basic GUI that will facilitate normal game-play. The program will emulate the board game and be able to strictly adhere to the game's rules if so desired. It will have its own virtual, randomized dice rolling system to ensure fairness. Y7	Yi	Display Calculator	Problem: We need a calculator in order to solve certain mathematical problems. Certain functions are difficult to imagine in terms of domain and range; therefore, along with solving simple arithmetic problems, the calculator will also need to display these in some way. In lehmens terms, you have a math problem, and the calulator will solve it for you and display the answer in some way. The calculator is able to display a graph of several inputted y(x) functions and can solve for information about these functions, such as derivative and integral. -------------------------------------- Proposed Solution: The calculator will ask the user for input for the mathematic problem. When the user pushes the "display" button, or the equals button, the calculator will solve the problem and display the answer on the screen. Y8	Yi	3^S	Problem: Our project is going to be a 2-dimensional platformer-style game. The user will be able to go left, right and jump. They will also have a gun or projectile weapon of some kind to attack enemies. The user will be able to obtain power-ups, such as better guns or a higher jump. They will play on a single, continuous level until all lives are lost. Score will be kept. Our project is necessary to play this game effectively because this type of game requires real-time interaction. -------------------------------------- Proposed Solution: Our solution will be to use inheritance since the user-controlled player and the enemies will have many of the same attributes. Y9	Yi	Tetris PC	Problem: We want to make a Tetris Game where the user can see and move pieces to get points by making the pieces fit into a solid row. Also the player can earn extra points by having the pieces move at a faster than normal pace. The project should allow people to play the game effectively by presenting easy to use controls and graphics that accurately show what is going on. -------------------------------------- Proposed Solution: We need to make a GUI so the player can interact with the game, create a playing grid and the pieces, link the grid and pieces to visual representations and create a timer for those pieces to move automatically. The player should be able to use the arrow keys to move left, right, and down. Only one piece drops at a time, which is the current piece that can be controlled by the player. A score system will keep track of when the down arrow is pressed to speed up the game and when a full row is made so that the game will give points to the player and remove that row from the game.
