Is

Yes:

|
How does the program fit with my home department and its requirements? |
Although
the program has several requirements beyond the home department
requirements for a doctoral student, we are convinced that
they do not impose an unwanted or heavy burden for the IGERT
scholars. Rather, we expect them to help attract motivated
students. Most of the requirements coincide with departmental
requirements (e.g., dissertation, courses, seminars) and add
focus, not significant extra work. Others are opportunities
(e.g., internship, career workshops, lecture series) that
will be attractive elements of the program. The mentoring,
research projects, and annual research review are indeed opportunities
that will take extra time; however, we believe that they will
be extremely valuable and will serve to produce the kind of
results that the NSF IGERT program intends. |
|
|
Are
the collaborative projects required? |
Yes,
the collaborative projects are a requirement. In their first
year, students must commit to a research project, designed
with at least one other IGERT students from a different department.
These projects are an important component of the interdiscplinary
goals of the IGERT program. Projects should begin during the
academic year and culminate in substantive summer activity.
Trainees may choose to work on another project in their second
year of fellowship support, or they may choose to take an
internship elsewhere. |

Details
of the funding |
This
is a five year program with over $3 million in funding.
Each year, top students from the program's participating departments
will contend for IGERT Fellowships. Each fellowship
will pay for a student's non-resident fees, in-state tuition,
and applicable health insurance. Visit UC Santa Barbara's
Graduate Division
for actual amounts. Fellowships also provide stipends
that are considerably higher than the average salary for Teaching
assistants and Research assistants.
All funding is provided through a grant from the National
Science Foundation's Integrative Graduate Education and
Research Traineeship (IGERT) Program. Visit the NSF
IGERT website for more information on the program
in general and for a list of other IGERTs. |
