The foundation
of the program, and the ultimate raison d’etre for the Ph.D.
students, is the multidisciplinary research they will perform, culminating
in a doctoral dissertation. The IGERT scholars are encouraged to
be involved in research projects from the start; the guaranteed
funding during the first two years frees them up to participate
in research out of interest (rather than out of a need for funding).
Student research will be guided by IGERT faculty, oftentimes
directly relating to the research of a specific advisor. Indeed,
students are expected to engage in research relevant to their advisor's
area.
By the end of their third year, typically, students present thesis
proposals. The focus of the remaining time (typically two years)
is on important, novel multidisciplinary research in an area relevant
to the interactive digital multimedia program, guided by a diverse
faculty committee.
