Beyond
the formal courses, students gain additional training and insight
through a special IGERT seminar
series, for which we invite leading artists, technologists,
and researchers in areas of interactive digital multimedia. We use
our proximity to Los Angeles, a major hub of activity in applications
of digital media, and to Silicon Valley, and also invite experts
from outside the state to create a high-quality invited seminar
series for the program and the UCSB campus and community. We also
leverage the UCSB Digital Media
Arts Lecture Series, which is currently bringing in well-known
digital artists on a weekly basis.
In addition to promoting interaction between students and leaders
in digital multimedia, the Seminar Series during the Fall quarter
provides a format for welcoming new students to the IGERT program.
This aspect of the Series is organized by the previous year's new
students, and its purpose is to give the new students a practical
introduction to the program, the facilities, the research and internship
opportunities, etc. The research interests and projects of the participating
faculty are described so that new students know right away with
whom they are most likely to share interests.
