During the
summer quarters, all IGERT students collaborate in small groups
to produce a substantive research project. Groups typically consist
of a total of two to five students from IGERT and Media Arts and
Technology. This group project provides an opportunity for IGERT
scholars to work with MAT students and with each other on a research
project that is significant but limited in scope, relative to the
eventual Ph.D. research. This will benefit the MAT student by providing
a greater context for the master’s project, and it will benefit
the IGERT students by giving them research experience that they
may be able to continue towards their dissertation research. Alternatively,
it can give them research experience in an area complementary to
their eventual dissertation research. Furthermore, since every
MAT student has to complete a master's thesis or project, the IGERT
Project Requirement gives students the opportunity to cultivate
mentor relationships with MAT students.
The goal of the project is to bring together a small, interdisciplinary
team of students with diverse experience, to complete a research
project that exemplifies interactive digital media, such as an interactive
art installation, a digital performance, or a mobile multimedia
database application. For example:
-
A group with expertise in software engineering,
signal processing, and composition collaborates on a new computer
music performance.
-
A group with image processing, computer vision,
and visual art expertise creates a new interactive art exhibition.
-
A group with backgrounds in database software,
video compression, and visualization works together on new techniques
for accessing and viewing large collections of video data.
The projects are overseen and approved by
two faculty from different departments. Accordingly, projects will
most likely be related to the current research of IGERT faculty
advisors.
