Digital
multimedia is fundamental to the computer and communications industries,
which are thoroughly international. Various media are ubiquitous
throughout the globe, transcending location, language, and culture.
It is clear that, in the long run, an international perspective
is absolutely necessary in these industries and in digital media-mediated
art and music. The IGERT program gives us a wonderful opportunity
to include an explicit international dimension to the traditional
departmental graduate education. For example, we specifically
invite international colleagues in interactive digital multimedia
to visit UCSB to participate in our lecture series. This is a good
way for the students to set up subsequent international lab visits.
Also, IGERT participating faculty have many international contacts,
prividing many more opportunities for IGERT students to do internships
with companies and university research labs outside of the United
States. One student, Alex Villacorta, Statistics Trainee, interned
at Microsoft Asia in Summer 2004.
UCSB has a number of collaborative agreements and exchange programs
with international universities that can provide opportunities for
IGERT students (as well as postdocs and faculty) to spend time abroad
doing research. For example:
-
Exchange Program with ETH, Zurich. Three to
five awards are available annually for UCSB students and postdocs
of all disciplines, for a stay of at least three months at ETH.
-
Collaborative Agreement Between UCSB and the
University of Iceland. This agreement enables an exchange of
faculty, researchers, and students for research projects, conferences,
and teaching.
-
The UCSB Education Abroad Program is an active
source of opportunities for graduate students to study at universities
abroad.
In addition, UCSB has cooperative agreements for
international exchange with the University of Karlsruhe in Germany,
the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology in Japan, Guerrero
University in Mexico, and other universities.
