To underscore
the importance of an appreciation for and understanding of real-world
problems and research issues, IGERT scholars are encouraged to do
an industry internship, normally during the summer after their second
year in the program. The position must be relevant to digital multimedia
and to the student’s general research interests and goals. Students
then report on their internships in a public presentation during
the following academic quarter to the other IGERT scholars and participants.
When it is appropriate, efforts will be made to continue to have
interaction with the industry mentor as the student progresses through
the graduate program by, for example, inviting the mentor to UCSB
to visit the program and give a colloquium, asking the mentor to
participate on the student’s dissertation committee, working at
the company during another summer, suggesting new IGERT students
for future intern positions, and applying for extramural funding
with the company’s sponsorship.
